Bellator title defence for M’Pumbu against Vegh

Christian M’Pumbu has a date set for the first defence of his Bellator light heavyweight title. M’Pumbu (18-4-1) will defend his belt at Bellator 84 against Attila Vegh (25-7-2 ) next month.

Bellator 84 takes place on December 14 at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana. The event will be the promotion’s Season 7 finale and will be its last event on MTV2 before moving to Spike TV in January for the start of its eighth season.

In addition to the light heavyweight title fight, Bellator 84, the company’s third trip to Hammond and second this season following Bellator 75, will feature the finals of the Season 7 lightweight and heavyweight tournaments. Also on the card is a rematch between former training partners and current rivals Felice Herrig and Michelle Gutierrez.

The bout between M’Pumbu and Vegh is expected to close out the main card following the Herrig-Gutierrez fight and the two $100,000 tourney finals.

M’Pumbu won the Season 4 light heavyweight tournament by stopping Chris Davis, Tim Carpenter and current heavyweight tournament finalist Rich Hale with TKOs in the spring of 2011. But since his win over Hale in the finals at Bellator 45, M’Pumbu has fought just once.

In October 2011, he took a non-title fight against Travis Wiuff and went down to a unanimous decision at Bellator 55. That was M’Pumbu’s most recent fight. His win in Season 4 was the promotion’s first light heavyweight tournament, and Bellator didn’t hold another tourney at 205 pounds until this past “Summer Series” when Vegh won with a quick stoppage of Wiuff at Bellator 73.

Vegh ubmitted Zelg Galesic in the opening round of the tourney before a narrow split-decision win over Emanuel Newton in the semifinals. Then he took out Wiuff decisively to book his eventual title fight against M’Pumbu.
