DaMarques Johnson cut by the UFC

Following his recent loss to Gunnar Nelson at UFC on FUEL TV 5 in Nottingham, DaMarques Johnson has been shown the exit door by the UFC.

The 30-year-old welterweight “The Ultimate Fighter 9” runner-up confirmed on Twitter that he has been released from his contract. It comes on the back of a three-fight losing streak, though the latest defeat came on late notice in strange circumstances.

Johnson (16-12 MMA, 4-6 UFC), who never went to a decision in 10 career UFC fights, lost to Nelson with a first-round rear-naked choke just 56 days after a violent knockout loss to Mike Swick.

Despite little recovery time, the UFC booked him for the event in England on September 29. While initially signed as a 175-pound catchweight fight, Johnson failed to make weight, coming in at 183 pounds, but the fight went ahead nevertheless.

Johnson, who fights out of Elite Performance in Utah, also failed to make weight for a 2010 fight with Matt Riddle.

Johnson gave no indication of what’s next for him, but like most released fighters, a few wins on the regional circuit could earn him an invitation back to the UFC.
